Don’t put those spring and summer dresses away yet, ladies! There are so many ways to wear them during fall and even winter with layering. Layering can help you stay warm in cooler temps. It doesn’t have to look bulky and lumpy either. Use these tips to help you layer dresses (or even a skirt and a top) to create new and interesting outfits with things you already own.
I got this blue floral shirtdress from Old Ranch Brands which is a newer sister company of Aventura. The white and blue floral print is typical of spring or summer, but I wanted to try layering it for fall.
Use Structured Pieces
Adding a structured piece like a blazer can help prevent any lumpiness or bulk that could be caused by a sweater or sweatshirt. It also helps add a more professional feeling to the outfit. I added a navy blazer over top the dress and nude mules for an easy fall work wear look.

Add Typical Fall Shades
If you are making a spring or summer dress work for fall, add in fall shades to help it transition the seasons better. If your dress is a bright color or pastels try adding in a jewel tone. Other typical fall colors like rust, olive, mustard, or dark neutrals will also help bring the dress into fall. I added a rust colored sweater and brown booties for more fall shades. The studded booties help add some edge, too.

Keep a slender silhouette
I understand that cozy, oversized, bulky sweaters are trending, but that isn’t what you necessarily want to layer over a dress. Light, thin layers are best to use to help flatter you most. I used a burgundy cardigan that hugs the dress and my body. That way it doesn’t make me look any bigger.

Layer underneath
Many people layer items over top of dresses or tops, but what about underneath? I think layering underneath creates a different look. It can showcase your dress more while keeping you warm. I added a simply navy turtleneck underneath, but then a vest over topfor extra fall collor and warmth!
