I started using the Microglo Dermabrasion Kit back in January as I mentioned in my Life Lately postat the end of the month. I followed it up partway through my 12 week treatment in March with an update. If you aren’t familiar with this system, it is an at-home microdermabrasion system. As far as microdermabrasion systems go, this one is a really good deal. It’s currently only $115 and you can use code LBAMBRICK for another 20% off. I’ve had a facial with microdermabrasion and it was pricey. Being able to do it at home in only 5 minutes a week is really convenient, especially for a time-pressed mommy like me. The instructions are really clear and there is even a video you can watch to help you. It took me a little bit to get the hang of how to hold it to best to make sure I am exfoliating my skin most effectively.
There are 4 different heads based on sensitivity and where you are using it. You normally begin with a #1 or #2 head and as your skin becomes more used to it, move up to the #3 head. The #4 head is for your body so if you have rough spots you can even use it on those. There are also 4 levels of suction that you begin low on and gradually increase. Microglo recommends 8-12 treatments on a weekly basis at first and then once a month afterwards for best results.
I included a photo of what my skin looks like right after using it, too if you are curious. There is some obvious redness especially on my cheeks and forehead, but it was all gone by morning. Excuse the end of day messy hair!
So what are my overall impressions? Here are the pros:
- easy to use
- comparably inexpensive (to getting it professionally done)
- quick
- somewhat effective
Here are the cons
- takes a little bit of time to get used to
- have to remember to use it regularly to see and maintain results
Did I see an improvement? Yes and no. I think my skin looked best halfway through treatment in the February photos. Pregnancy was not kind to my skin. I have melasma (dark patches on my forehead and upper cheeks) that don’t seem to want completely go away. They noticeably faded after using Microglo a few weeks. Then we spent spring break in Arizona and they came right back in spite of using sunscreen daily. I was so disappointed. You can see it on my forehead and near my eyes in my most recent pics. Thankfully I can cover them with makeup, but I wish my skin looked better and more even without it! Overall I did see improvement on some fine lines I have around my mouth and on my forehead. Unfortunately those didn’t really show up in photos.
So what are my next steps? I am currently trying out a new serum that is supposed to help with sunspots and skin tone as a part of my routine. I might also add in a product with hydroquinone to help fade the patches. I also swapped out my moisturizer/sunscreen with one that has a higher SPF. Even though I have used the Microglo system for 12 weeks now, I will continue using it on a weekly basis to help fade it. I do believe the system works, it was outside factors that caused my skin to worsen. If you have any questions I didn’t cover let me know in the comments!
