Let’s be honest. Nothing is particularly easy with a toddler. But bath time with all the potential for mess and puddles certainly has the makings of disaster, especially if said bath comes at the end of a busy day. Here are some ways I’ve found that can make it go more smoothly for all parties involved!
1. Give choices
Bath or shower? (Yes we occasionally give our 2 year old a shower. She just wants to be like mommy and daddy sometimes.) Which shampoo? The list goes on and on. This way you child feels like she/he has some say in it all.
2. Engaging toys
Not all bath toys are created the same. Rubber ducky isn’t cutting it anymore. We have a whole rubber ducky family that we do make believe with and sing songs about. Foam letters are great, too. Yes, they are only toddlers, but that doesn’t mean you can’t start exposing them to letters and numbers. It’s a fun way to teach letter sounds (It’s a M! M is for Momma!) and have them learn to spell their own names. Bath crayons are great, too. They help teach colors and fine motor skills. Mirrors are another great toy so kids can see all the crazy ways you style their shampooed hair!
3. Personalized items
Having their own towel helps keep interest and makes them want to use it.
4. Let them be independent
Let your kids do it. They can help with the washing, rubbing shampoo in, and rinsing off. It teaches independence and they really like being able to do it themselves. You can always do a quick re-wash if they do that bad of a job!
