New Year, same old mess? January is a great time to make resolutions and set intentions for the upcoming year. But these don’t have to be the same old diet and fitness resolutions you hate putting in place. Instead, they can be all about your home life and becoming happier at home. Resolutions such as getting organized, tidying up the garden, or cooking healthier meals can help you feel better and enjoy your home more. So I’m going to walk you through seven home resolutions to make this January that will get you off to a great start! Let’s take a look.
1. Create a Cleaning Schedule
Keeping your home clean may seem like an overwhelming task, but it doesn’t have to be. So to kick things off, start by creating a cleaning schedule that works for you and your family. Break down big tasks into smaller chunks and assign them out over the week or month. This will help you stay on top of all the little things that need doing around the home. You’ll feel so much more in control when you do.
2. Organize Your Home
Next on the list is to get organized! Decluttering can be daunting, so start small. Choose one space in your home each weekend and tackle it until it’s completely organized. You’ll be surprised at how much of a difference just tidying up one room or closet can make! And don’t forget about storage solutions for each room you tackle—buy some bins or baskets if needed to keep everything neat and tidy.
3. Cook New Meals
Bored of eating the same old things every week? Why not shake up mealtime with new recipes? Whether it’s trying out vegan dishes or mastering a new baking technique, discovering new flavors is always fun and exciting—not to mention delicious! You could ask a friend for their favorite recipe ideas or even try to make these crockpot drumsticks and other easy, tasty recipes by looking for ideas online! Plus, cooking from scratch is healthier than take-out food and cheaper too. Every week or so I like to try one new recipe. I’ve found many good ones that way!
4. Meal Prep
Meal prepping can save you both time and money throughout the week when life gets busy. Dedicate some time on Sunday evenings or Saturday mornings to plan meals for the upcoming week and shop accordingly. Then prep what ingredients you can in advance before actually cooking each day’s meal later on in the week when needed (bonus points if they are healthy options!). By doing this with your lunches, you’ll find that you’ll save yourself so much more time and money too. Another good idea is to make double batches of recipes and freeze half for later. It’s nice for busy weeks to pull out pre-made dinners from your freezer instead of resorting to carryout.
5. Spring Cleaning
Get ahead of spring cleaning by starting early this year! Take inventory of what needs doing (like dusting high shelves or reorganizing closets) so that come March, when everyone else is spring-cleaning, you’ll already be done with most of it! It’s also a good idea to go through your closet during this time too—donate any unwanted items instead of letting them pile up in your wardrobe all year long!

6. Tidy Up The Garden
It’s never too early to get ready for summer—particularly for any warm spring days that come our way. So get outside and clear out those flower beds, leaves, and debris, trim trees, mow lawns, patch up fences, check irrigation systems…whatever it is that needs doing in your yard.
There are many tools out there that help make these jobs easier. For instance, when tackling those stubborn leaves and debris, a cordless leaf blower can save you a lot of time and effort, leaving your garden looking neat with minimal fuss. Taking care of these tasks now will give you more free time come summer when you want to spend as much time outside as possible soaking up those vitamin D rays!
7. Better Storage Solutions
If your home seems cluttered no matter how hard you try organizing it, then maybe it’s time for better storage solutions? Invest in some wall shelves, stackable boxes, hanging organizers— whatever helps make better use of vertical space. Because having enough storage is key for keeping any room tidy and clutter-free in between weekly cleanings or bigger decluttering sessions every few months or so.
Having the Best Year at Home Yet!
Making resolutions that involve taking care of our homes help us feel comfortable in our living space which leads to greater mental wellbeing overall. Not to mention making it easier to find things without having to search through piles of junk every time we need something! So pick one (or more!) resolution from this list and get ready for an even better year full of fresh energy at home. Happy organizing everyone!
