For salons providing hair coloring services, providing long-lasting results is extremely important. Of course, treatments that need to be regularly refreshed will have customers coming back more often, and thus spending more in the long term. But you might equally decide that you’re not getting value for money.
It’s a good idea to know tips on how to look after your hair color keeping it vibrant for as long as possible. So, what are the mistakes to avoid when you’re looking after colored hair?
Don’t wash too soon or too often
Shampoo is designed to remove dirt and grime from your hair – but it can’t distinguish between the chemicals that color your hair and the bad stuff. It’s therefore a good idea to wait a few days for the dye to really do its work before washing.
Excessive rinsing can also be counteractive, especially if it’s being done with hot water. The same goes for using the wrong shampoo. Your specialist might have a few particular recommendations.

Avoid heat
I’ve already mentioned how hot-water rinsing can be damaging to your color. But the same applies to other heat-dependent styling techniques, like curling or straightening. Heat opens the cuticles in your hair, which will allow the coloring to leak out. Avoid heat to help keep your hair healthy.
Boost with semi-permanent dyes
Applying a permanent dye too often can be disastrous for the condition of your hair. When hair needs to be refreshed more often than once every six weeks or so, it’s better to apply a semi-permanent treatment instead.

Avoid chemicals
Hair products which contain certain caustic chemicals are to be avoided. Sulphates and parabens are particularly notorious, but you should also be on the lookout for salt and alcohol. Check the label on the bottle to ensure that you’re okay. For much the same reason, you might be careful when you’re swimming – whether it’s in the pool or the sea. This doesn’t mean you can’t go out swimming – just time it so that you refresh your coloring when you get back from holiday, rather than just before you go.
Use hair masks
You can think of a hair mask as akin to a face mask, but for your hair. You can make these yourself, or buy them bottled. It’s a bit like an extra-strength conditioner, and it’ll provide many of the same benefits: your hair will be shinier, less frizzy, and less prone to breakage.
