- Red Fort: This massive fort in Delhi stands on top of an ancient city wall that dates back to 1533 CE, making it one of the oldest standing structures in Delhi today. It was also home to 5 Mughal emperors before falling into disuse after Indian independence from British rule. The red sandstone structure has been restored several times since then. It now houses museums showcasing some fascinating artifacts from Mughal times, including swords with gemstone handles and even some pieces from Tipu Sultan’s palace!
- Humayun’s Tomb: Humayun’s Tomb was built during Mughal ruler Humayun’s lifetime (1530–1540). However he did not live long enough to see its completion before dying unexpectedly at age forty-four. His son Akbar built it according to his father’s wishes instead. Today it remains one of New Delhi’s most popular tourist attractions. The tomb is near other major historical sites such as Purana Qila (Old Fort) or Jama Masjid mosque nearby. The location makes it easy to access everything within walking distance if needed.
