Valentine’s Day may be a few weeks away, but that just means that it’s the perfect time to start looking for a present for the special people in your life. Plants and flowers are the perfect option. Why? Well, they look great at home, they clean the air in indoor spaces, they uplift the mood, and they’re a great home decor option if you’re trying to go green and avoid plastics and other harmful materials.
There are all sorts of options if you want to give someone a plant as a gift, and even some flowering ones that look lovely both when they’re blooming and when they aren’t. Succulents aren’t your only options when it comes to getting your mom some low maintenance plants, and there are a lot of indoor flowering plants that would look just as beautiful as an outdoors flower garden.
Keep reading to learn about some great flowering and non-flowering get-well, just-because, hostess, Valentine’s Day, or Mother’s Day plants that can bring her joy all year round!
Maintenance but Beautiful
A lot of people want a touch of nature in their homes, but end up getting fake plants so they don’t have to regularly look after them. It’s not just laziness either, sometimes you live a lifestyle that you can’t always be home in time to water your plants. For whatever reason, you might need something that can survive without constant coddling.
The thing is, there’s a compromise between having to get a beautiful plant that requires a lot of care and a literal piece of unliving plastic – low maintenance plants!
Here’s a list of some low maintenance plants that would look great in a home, that you don’t have to work hard to look after:
English Ivy
English Ivy is a beautiful hanging plant that will look great hanging from the ceiling. They don’t need a lot of water – in fact, they need the soil to be a little dry to the touch to grow perfectly, and they also need limited amounts of sunlight which makes them perfect indoor plants to give as a present.
Chinese Evergreen
Yet another plant that doesn’t need a lot of water or light to thrive, Chinese Evergreen plants will be happiest when kept in a little bit of shade (or indoors!) and given water occasionally. Make sure you put them in soil that drains easily, and your recipient will have a beautiful, thriving plant at her hands.
Jade
Jade plants are tiny and delightful. You want to make sure you never water them too often, or they’ll actually get sick and die. The best place to put them though is next to a window where they’ll get lots of sun during the day, and that’s pretty much all you need for a healthy Jade plant.
Winter Flowering Plants
Who says you can only have beautiful flowers in spring? Not me. Try to grow some of these beautiful plants that flower in the winters:
Hibiscus
This potted plant will yield beautiful red flowers in the winters, which is why it’s a great option for a gift. You’re supposed to water them and give them lots of sunlight to make sure they thrive and flower, but it’s a great plant for anyone who can take care of it.

African Violet
These violets are bright, eye catching, and beautiful. Any kind of multipurpose potting soil works for this Kenyan plant, but you have to be a little careful about watering it if you want best results and lots of flowers.
It thrives in non-direct sunlight, which can be provided by either a window close by (but don’t keep it in direct sunlight!) or even artificial lighting. Make sure not to overwater the plant because it can rot very easily, and keep the soil just slightly moist. You can even give them a little fertilizer in the summer, but make sure not to overdo it. No fertilizer is better than too much fertilizer!
Christmas Cactus
You might be picturing a succulent, but the Christmas cactus is a very beautiful flowering plant that blooms in the winter. It has gorgeous pink flowers, and does best in bright but indirect light and relatively colder daytime temperatures. They need to be watered very rarely, and only when the soil feels particularly dry.
Beautiful Spring Blooms
It can be so hard to buy gifts for some people when it feels like they already have everything, but the one thing you never have enough of are flowers and plants. The more the better, and there really is nothing that gives your home a cozy touch quite like the right kind of flowers.
Azalea Bushes
Azalea bushes can be grown in gardens, but they need to be protected from the sun. You might need to make sure that they’re also protected from harsh winds, and these plants are pretty much delicate, so to speak. The up side? They’re stunning when they bloom, and they make for gorgeous and colorful additions to the front or back yard. If this seems like too much work, get an Azalea bonsai to keep indoors – they’re smaller and don’t require a lot of work.
Pot Roses
Who says roses can only either be bouquets or huge bushes out in the front yard? There are certain kinds of roses that can be planted in pots indoors, which can be amazing additions to a home. These roses come in all sorts of colors, and should be kept in cool places, so it might not be a good idea to keep them in the living room if your recipient likes it extra cozy.
Flaming Katy
This one is a succulent that’s colorful, vibrant, and bright. It has dark green leaves and bright pink flowers, and can last for years. Being a succulent, it’s also a very low maintenance plant you don’t have to worry too much about, all the while bringing lots of color and brightness to your days.
I hope these plants give you some great ideas for gifts to the special people in your life in the upcoming weeks and months!
