Do you wish you had more space in your home? I feel like the longer we are encouraged to stay at home, the smaller our houses feel! Perhaps you live in a cozy house or have young children running around and taking up all the room with their forts and toys. Or maybe you are short on shortage or have a hard time throwing anything away.
Whatever your reasons for wanting more space in your life, there are many ways to achieve it, no matter how big your home is. You don’t need to move to a new house or pay for a costly side return extension. You just have to make the most of the space you do have and be smart about your home layout. To help you get started on your journey, here are four tips to maximize the space in your home.
Declutter
The first and most obvious step in making more space in your home is to declutter. This means getting rid of anything you don’t need. Take a good look around every room of your home and decide what to keep and what to throw away. The stricter you are with your possessions, the better results you will get. Do you really need all those DVDs and CDs just taking up space on your shelves? Will you ever get around to mending those broken appliances and pieces of furniture? Keeping your home as minimalist as possible will make it feel a lot bigger while creating a more calming, relaxing environment free of clutter and mess. You can always donate your old belongings to charity or sell them online. Each season I try to go through all of our closets and get rid of unwanted, worn, or too-small clothing and things we no longer use or play with. Even while Christmas decorating I was able to set things aside to be donated. It’s all about really thinking about your space and the items you truly use within it.
Be smart with storage
Once you have gotten rid of the things you don’t need, it’s time to find a better home for those that you do. Storing items out of sight is an effective way to create more space and make your home more aesthetically pleasing. Smart storage solutions such as shelving units and plastic containers that can be tucked neatly at the back of a wardrobe are an excellent way to put aside the items you don’t need right now. If you have a bit of money to invest in your space-saving venture, there are more discreet options such as underfloor and even under-stair storage. And if you are shopping for new furniture, think about storage options it may have. Bedside tables, end tables, even bed frames can all add a lot of storage to your home!
Change the layout
Perhaps all your home needs is a new layout. By rearranging all your furniture, you might find a new configuration that works better. Putting larger objects to the corners and edges of the room and leaving the center more open will create a lot more space.
Create the illusion of space
If you’ve reached your limit when it comes to making more room, there are still things you can do to make your home look more spacious than it really is. Mirrors are a great way to make a room seem bigger, while taller furniture and accessories give the illusion of height. And painting rooms in lighter colors also helps!
So if you wish your home was bigger, there are plenty of things you can do to create more room and make the most of your space. I hope these tips help you!
