Making the decision to pursue a career when you are starting out after high school can be one of the hardest decisions you can make. It’s such a young age to decide what you would like to do for the rest of your life. As you grow and become more experienced, many people decide to make a career change due to their changing interests. If you have decided that you are ready for a career change, you have already made one crucial decision. The next important decision you need to make is what career path you are going to take. You may feel like there is more pressure on you to get the decision right considering you’re having a change of heart and going in a no direction. However, it is important to take a moment and breathe. It’s more important to be happy in your career choice than to feel stuck in one you chose at 18!
So, how can you make sure that your next career path is the right one? Well, there are a few steps you can take and a number of things you should look at in order to make your decision.
The first thing you may want to consider is to take the Enneagram test. What is the Enneagram test? This is a personality test, which will inform you which of the nine personality types you are most suited to. By understanding your personality, you will be in a better position to understand what sort of careers that may work best for you.
For example, a Type 7 personality is an adventurer. So someone with this personality type would thrive as a writer, photographer, designer, or travel agent. However, if you are a Type 5 personality, which is a thinker, you may be better suited to being a scholar, scientist, or engineer, for example.

It’s a good idea to sit down and make a list of the different careers that appeal to you the most. Consider what you love in your daily life, look at your hobbies. Is there any career in line with those? Once you have done this, you should conduct in-depth research on each career. Often, a lot of people think that a certain career sounds great on the surface, but they do not fully understand what is entailed until they do a bit of digging. This is why it is imperative to spend some time researching so that you can fully understand the typical day-to-day life in your new potential role and whether or not it is right for you. If possible, see if you can shadow someone in that role for a day so you can ask questions and see all of the responsibilities that go along with that particular position.
You also need to consider whether you are going to need to retrain or go back to school for your new career. If so, is this something you are prepared to do? What sort of training are you going to need to get your foot into the door? You may be happy and excited by the prospect of starting all over again. Or, you may prefer to use your existing skills and transfer them to a different career with minimal training involved?
I hope these considerations help if you are deciding on a new career path or even your first potential career! I hope these tips help you choose the the perfect career for you! Remember to take your time and to assess your options carefully. Don’t feel pressure to make a rash decision; do what is right for you.
