This is the third year I’ve decided to do a closet inventory. You can find 2014 here, and 2015 here. I’ve never been on a mission to decrease or increase my closet, but it is certainly interesting to see how things change.
As with the last times, I did not count athletic clothing, lounge wear, pajamas, or under garments. I also didn’t get into my accessories. Without further adieu…

I like to look at trends like the consistent decrease in 3/4 sleeve tops, heavy coats, dress pants, and flats. It’s interesting to figure out why that is and then take that information when shopping in the future. For example, 3/4 sleeve tops just aren’t as practical for me. It’s either too cold and I want a full sleeve, or too warm and I’d prefer a tank or short sleeve top. I also don’t think they layer as well. So I will most likely avoid them in the future. Since I have a casual lifestyle, dress pants are not something I need more of. And for flats and heavy coats, I’ve been able to pair down to items I really use more.
I also noticed dresses, long sleeve tops, sweaters, skirts, and heels increased in number. As someone who is almost always cold and lives in the midwest, more long sleeve tops and sweaters is no surprise to me. I love to purchase skirts and have a hard time getting rid of them. In my defense, they are all so different with fits, colors, lengths, and prints! I think my increase in dresses and heels is a combination of collaborations (dresses are easier pick), DSW coupons, and a desire for more date nights with my fabulous husband! If only there was more time!
I think I will continue to try my one-in-one-out philosophy and maybe even get rid of a few additional items. Over the years I feel my closet just gets more and more versatile so while the number doesn’t change much, there seems to be so many more options now.
Have you ever done a closet inventory? How does yours compare?
