Did you know you can find a plethora of makeup tips for glasses wearers, but very little advice on how to use them as an accessory? Long ago glasses were a fashion faux pas, but now there are so many options to choose from to fit your face shape and your personality. They are one of the few function-meets-fashion accessories. And with the wealth of colors, shapes, and sizes for frames now, they can definitely be a stylish addition to any outfit. But, how do you choose the right frame for your look? And how to you make sure they don’t compete with your outfit? Here are some tips to help you choose the right frames for your style and how to use them as the fabulous accessory they are!
1. Ignore the rules!
Don’t worry about what shape best compliments your face. Who cares? What is important is how you feel about the frames and how you feel in them. Go with your gut and pick the ones that you love the most. Those will be the ones you want to wear and feel most confident in. Not the ones you think you should get.
2. Make sure you choose frames that compliment your style.
Glasses can compliment many different styles so make sure you choose a frame that will best suit what you like to wear. Do you typically like retro or vintage styles? Then choose a retro or vintage frame to compliment your outfit. If you want to look more professional or preppy, choose more of a geometric shape or tortoise shell frame. If you favor clean lines in your clothing choose a frame that has clean lines as well. If you desire to have more of a sophisticated look, go for rimless or wire frames.
3. Don’t forget about color.
Since glasses are an accessory, you need to decide if you want your frames to compliment your outfit or make a statement. You can do that with color. Neutrals are always a safe choice, but choosing a bolder color can be a fun choice, too. Think of an all black outfit with bold red frames. Now think of the same outfit with black frames. You have to decide what you want to do with your accessories-have them compliment or make a statement, but never compete with what you are wearing.
4. What about other accessories?
Especially with bolder frames (like the ones I have), if you plan on adding additional accessories, it is best to go the dainty route. With a bolder frame, try to stick to stud earrings, and a dainty necklace. Otherwise it will compete with your glasses and be too much. Statement bracelets or an arm party or bigger rings is an option because your wrists and hands are farther away from your face. With a smaller, more subtle frame larger accessories can still work. It’s all about balance.
5. It’s always nice to have options.
If it’s in your budget, have a few different frames on hand. That way there isn’t the stress of choosing one frame to go with every potential outfit. You can have a sophisticated pair, bold pair, and colorful pair!
With this outfit I chose to go preppy with bold, navy frames to compliment my outfit. Because I already had bold colors and a pattern close to my face, I wanted frames that would compliment my look, not make a statement and compete with it. The clean lines of the glasses are echoed in my outfit further complimenting the look. And the navy frames matched my vest so they didn’t take away from anything. I kept jewelry minimal with studs and a bigger watch. Glasses really are a fabulous accessory to any outfit!
