I’ll admit, I was a little unsure when this dress arrived. It runs large and the waist isn’t cinched in at all so it looked a bit like a bag on me. The fabric was nice and lightweight though and I loved the print and fun statement sleeves. Over the years, I have learned very oversized items aren’t the best for my body type, particularly dresses. I have a rectangle/inverse triangle shape and because my shoulders are comparatively wider when a dress or top hangs off the widest part of my body it makes the rest of me look equally wide. So I typically avoid that fit, but to make this dress work for me, I figured I could add structure to it with a jacket or a belt. With the heat I chose a belt in lieu of adding another layer. Most of the things I have read say with a rectangle or inverse triangle belting items is a good way to ‘make a waist’. With this dress I was able to belt it and pull it up a bit over the belt creating a blousing effect. This creates an illusion of a smaller waist and more hourglass shape and because the fabric is so lightweight, it doesn’t add bulk to your hips either! While I typically do not find belting to be flattering on me- in spite of most styling advice, I think with the fabric and blousing effect it works! So I want to know, are you pro-belting or anti-belting things like this?
